Overview

How this policy works in practice

What are cookies

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device (computer, tablet, or mobile phone) when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work more efficiently, to provide information to website operators, and to enable certain features. In addition to cookies, websites may use similar technologies such as web beacons (small, invisible images embedded in web pages), pixels, local storage, and server-side mechanisms to collect and store information. Throughout this policy, we use the term “cookies” broadly to refer to all such technologies. Cookies can be “first-party” (set by the website you are visiting) or “third-party” (set by a service other than the website you are visiting). Cookies can also be “session” cookies (which are deleted when you close your browser) or “persistent” cookies (which remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them).

Essential cookies

Essential cookies are strictly necessary for the operation of our website. These cookies do not require your consent under applicable data protection laws, including the GDPR and ePrivacy Directive, because the website cannot function properly without them. We use the following essential cookie: • payload-token — This is an authentication cookie used exclusively for administrative access to our content management system (Payload CMS). It is set only when an authorized administrator logs in to manage site content. It is not set for regular visitors browsing the site. This cookie is HttpOnly and transmitted only over secure (HTTPS) connections. We also employ the following technical mechanisms that are not cookies but are worth noting for transparency: • CSP Nonce — A unique cryptographic token generated on each page request and sent as an HTTP header. It is used to enforce our Content Security Policy and protect against cross-site scripting attacks. It is not stored on your device. • Rate Limiting — We use Upstash Redis to process your IP address for the purpose of preventing abuse and ensuring fair use of the site. No cookie is set for this purpose, and IP addresses are processed transiently for rate-limiting calculations only.

Analytics cookies

We use Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID: G-YYL319RET0) to understand how visitors interact with our website. This helps us improve the content, structure, and usefulness of AI Policy Map as a civic research tool. Google Analytics collects information such as which pages you visit, how long you spend on each page, how you arrived at the site (referrer), your device type, browser, operating system, screen resolution, and approximate geographic location derived from your IP address. Google Analytics sets the following cookies on your device: • _ga — Used to distinguish unique visitors to the site by assigning a randomly generated identifier. This cookie does not contain any personally identifiable information. Expiry: 2 years. • _ga_<container-id> — Used to maintain and persist session state across page views, allowing Google Analytics to group your activity into a single session. Expiry: 2 years. Google Analytics processes this data on our behalf and may transfer it to servers located in the United States. Google may also use this data in accordance with its own policies. You can review Google’s privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy and learn more about how Google uses data from partner sites at https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. We do not use Google Analytics to identify individual users, build user profiles, or support advertising. AI Policy Map does not sell or share analytics data with third parties for their own purposes.

Performance and experience cookies

We use Microsoft Clarity (project ID: vzf7b7dmp5) to better understand how visitors interact with our website through session replays, heatmaps, and behavioral metrics. This helps us identify usability issues, understand which content is most engaging, and improve the overall experience of the site. Microsoft Clarity sets the following cookies on your device: • _clck — Persists a unique Clarity user ID so that behavior can be attributed to the same visitor across multiple sessions. Expiry: 12 months. • _clsk — Connects multiple pageviews by a user into a single Clarity session recording. Expiry: 1 day. • MUID — A Microsoft user identifier used across Microsoft services to identify unique browsers and devices. Expiry: 13 months. • ANONCHK — Used to indicate whether the MUID cookie value has been transferred to the ANID cookie, which is used for advertising outside the European Union. Within the EU, this cookie is not used for advertising purposes. Expiry: end of browser session. • SM — Used to synchronize the MUID identifier across Microsoft domains. Expiry: end of browser session. Microsoft Clarity masks sensitive content in session replays by default and does not capture text typed into form fields. However, Microsoft may transfer the data it collects to servers in the United States. You can review Microsoft Clarity’s terms and privacy information at https://clarity.microsoft.com/terms and Microsoft’s broader privacy statement at https://privacy.microsoft.com/privacystatement. We do not use Microsoft Clarity data for advertising, and we do not share Clarity data with third parties for their own independent use.

How to manage cookies

You have the right to decide whether to accept or reject cookies. Most web browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. Below is general guidance for managing cookies in major browsers: • Google Chrome — Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and Other Site Data. You can block third-party cookies, clear existing cookies, or configure per-site permissions. • Mozilla Firefox — Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data. Firefox also offers Enhanced Tracking Protection, which blocks many third-party tracking cookies by default. • Apple Safari — Go to Settings > Privacy (on macOS: Safari > Preferences > Privacy). Safari blocks cross-site tracking cookies by default through Intelligent Tracking Prevention. • Microsoft Edge — Go to Settings > Cookies and Site Permissions > Manage and Delete Cookies and Site Data. Edge also offers tracking prevention levels (Basic, Balanced, Strict). Please note that blocking or deleting cookies may affect the functionality of some parts of the website. Essential cookies cannot be disabled without impairing core site functionality. You can also opt out of specific analytics services directly: • Google Analytics — Install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, available at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout. This prevents Google Analytics JavaScript from sending data to Google Analytics. • Microsoft Clarity — You can opt out of Clarity tracking by visiting https://clarity.microsoft.com/optout. For more general information about cookies and how to manage them, you can visit https://www.allaboutcookies.org or https://www.youronlinechoices.eu.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use, changes in applicable law, or improvements to our practices. When we make changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this policy. We encourage you to review this Cookie Policy periodically to stay informed about how we use cookies. If we make material changes that significantly affect your privacy rights, we will make reasonable efforts to notify you, such as by placing a prominent notice on our website. If you have any questions about this Cookie Policy or our use of cookies, you can contact us at info@aipolicymap.com.
